Loetscher celebrates the widely admired, hard-working Swiss miller with this one-of-a-kind chalet cuckoo clock. Flour milling is still a highly revered trade in Switzerland, and one of the world’s premier institutions, The Swiss School of Milling, is located in St. Gallen, Switzerland. Because this mountainous country historically has had a limited supply of homegrown grain, our millers have developed highly efficient techniques over the centuries and built flourmills that operate with the precision of—what else—a fine Swiss cuckoo clock! The scene depicted in this distinctive model is that of a miller hunched over, hauling a heavy bag of flour on his back. His apron is stained brown, bearing the accumulation of years of working with this precious grain. Off to the right side of the scene, under the shelter of a small hut, you’ll find the milling stone, which rotates when the music plays. Next to the milling stone stands our devoted St. Bernard, Barry. The exquisitely detailed waterwheel to the left is surrounded by an array of other finely crafted elements, including flowing water, a decorative plate and a stone wall. Our cuckoo bird calls out on the hour, after which you’ll hear a heavenly tune. Dancers on the balcony twirl to the sound of the music. Finally, and as with all our Loetscher clocks, the boulders and colorful flowers sprinkled throughout the scene are handcrafted from sand collected at the shore of Lake Brienz. Movement runs for eight straight days before you need to wind up the chain. Dancing couples who are positioned below the cuckoo and begin a waltz at the sound of music playing. Millstone and Waterwheel, both of which turn with the music. The figurines are hand-carved and hand-painted, which makes each one of them original and unique. A manual switch that allows you to turn off the music and the cuckoo without affecting the clock’s movement.
